I've only ever tried out Minecraft Layer and it never went into production (my SMP server that is) but from what I used with up to 2 players (lol) it was pretty good. Good service too, they always responded quickly to my tickets.
The first server was hosted with Fluctis. They were very cost effective and their control panel was cool. Too bad we had some issues with the server we couldn't overcome. Currently the GamingStylez SMP server is hosted with Fragnet and is a considerably better, support is awesome, and they give you 50% off VOIP hosting when you have a game server with them.

Recommend server hosts in this thread!

Quick responses from staff always get a plus in my book. Afraid I'm not much help in this department since I've only hosted from the home PC.
