Thing I don't like about the 1.3 update is that monsters should now be able to spawn on half-slabs. And I'v recently mad my house mob proof with half-slabs *sigh*
The half slabs they spawn on are supposed to be top half-slabs. Like if you place a half slab under a full block, then remove the full block above creating a spawnable surface. Half slabs placed on top of a full block should still prevent spawning. Same goes with upside-down stairs with nothing above to prevent spawning. Hope this helps!

Thats why you scatter your traps VERY far away from your home, or, just to fall traps that can work very well(:
